Having a strong craving for something nourishing, comforting and hot? Bone broth soup! Here is a home-style recipes that nourish and heal!
Last week was a doozey! Ever hear the term, reverse “miracle”? Its when things go all wrong in such a perfectly timed way that it’s near miraculous. That’s what happened to me with my (still) broken foot. A series of mistakes and off doctor-patient bedside manner derailed the healing process and pushed it back by a few weeks. It was exhausting and depleting both emotionally and financially.
One of the things I took away form this turn of events was that your body deserves your compassion. It’s helpless without YOUR intuition and focus. It cannot ONLY rely on doctors and experts; it actually needs YOU. It needs your emuna that it CAN heal, it needs you to stay calm, to relax. It needs your love, attention, and your belief in its ability to heal. It is time to give my broken foot, and my entire body actually, a lot of love and compassion.
Ever hear the term, reverse “miracle”? That’s what happened to me with my (still) broken foot!
Which brings me to the other thing that came to me by the end of last week – a strong craving for something nourishing, comforting, and hot. Like lemon ginger honey tea but something else… Bone broth! Bone broth soup is a staple in my kitchen from late December through end of February, so my craving was actually quite timely. This home made stock is so rich in taste and powerful in healing and comfort, far beyond anything you would get from store-brought soup. I probably should have been making it for myself since the day I broke my foot but I wasn’t focused.
Anyway, I got the original recipe from Nourishing Traditions, the most incredible cookbook and resource for traditional, home-style recipes that nourish, comfort, and heal. I highly recommend it. It took me from feeding my family to nourishing and healing my family – two totally different things. Here’s my basic version of bone broth, which I got from Nourishing Traditions but improvised a little to fit my personal style.
This home made stock is so rich in taste and powerful in healing!
Ingredients
1 package chicken bones
1 package bone marrow bones
8 cups water
¼ cup vinegar
1 onion
3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
6 carrots
10 black peppercorns
1 TBS real salt (the grey or pink kind)
1 bunch parsley or coriander
Directions
Place all ingredients except for parsley/coriander in a large pot and bring to a boil. After an hour, remove scum that rose to the top and reduce heat. Simmer partially covered for 12-24 hours. You can also simmer it for longer if you’d like. Add the parsley 15 minutes before soup is done. After it cools a bit, strain through a colander.
Now you can simply enjoy the broth or add it to other meat soups and recipes that call for soup broth.
