This Thursday night is Lag Ba’Omer. The joy is over the top. However, we are left to wonder: Isn’t the day that Rebbe Shimon Bar Yochai passed away supposed to be a national day of mourning? How can we be happy?

Reb Noson explains that this encapsulates the essence of the Tzaddik, as compared to a regular person. After the Tzaddik passes away, specifically then, his soul can become much more elevated than when it was trapped inside his body. The day of the hillula is the day when the Tzaddik is further elevated to greater heights, and on that day he can bring great salvation to people on the lowest levels. This is the reason for the great joy on the day of the Tzaddik’s passing. May we merit this!

He is a sought-after lecturer on Rebbe Nachman’s teachings by English-speaking congregations around the world.
