Rosh Hashana is around the corner, so I want to share with you my Savta Puah’s Apple Crisp Recipe. Enjoy it as much as our family does!!
Rosh Hashana is just about two weeks away, ushering in the High Holidays and Fall – my favorite season. Not that it’s very Fall-like where I live, but I grab on to any small dip in temperatures and basically make believe – LOL!
There’s something about apples, Rosh Hashana and Fall that makes me very nostalgic. Growing up, my Savta Puah used to make apple pie on a regular basis during the Fall and Winter months and apple crisp for special occasions. I would come to her on Erev Shabbos and there was the apple crisp, topped with pecans from her pecan tree, fresh out of the oven. Every week, seeing and smelling it upon entering my savta’s home, I would get the most amazing homey, cozy, warm feeling.

I’ve had my share of apple crisps over the years, and while they were all good, nothing beats Savta Puah’s apple crisp! So long ago, I decided it would be my premiere apple dish for Rosh Hashana. And what makes it so awesome, you ask? You just have to taste it to understand. It might be that I’m just very subjective and nostalgic about this recipe, but so many people have asked me for it over the years, I’m pretty sure I’m not just being subjective.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as our family does!
Ingredients
9 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced ¼-inch thick
¼ cup apple cider
½ cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
¼ teaspoon salt
Topping
¾ cup flour (can be 80% whole wheat)
½ cup quick oats
¼ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¾ teaspoon baking powder
½ cup canola oil (I use coconut oil for health reasons)
½ cup chopped pecans
Instructions
Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
Toss the apples with the apple cider, brown sugar, flour, oil, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and salt, and spread the mixture in the prepared pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, salt, sugar, cinnamon, and baking powder. Add the oil and mix with a fork until mixture resembles large crumbs. Toss in the chopped pecans. Spread the topping evenly over the apples in the pan.
Bake for about 55 to 60 minutes until the top is golden. Cool for at least 20 minutes before serving.
