Parshat Pinchas: After the Resurrection of the Dead, Who Will Live?

In Parshat Pinchas, the Torah enumerates Pinchas’s genealogy. The Torah traces his genealogy back to his grandfather Aharon HaKohen. We also know from other sources that Pinchas is the prophet Eliyahu.

Reb Nosson tells us that Aharon’s great quality was humility. Aharon accepted Moshe Rabbeinu, his younger brother, as his leader. This is the same quality that Eliyahu Hanavi, who is the catalyst for the geulah, possesses in abundance. Eliyahu Hanavi’s humility is part and parcel of his ability to be the harbinger of the redemption.

Rebbe Nachman teaches us something amazing. We know that in the time of Mashiach, there will be techiyas hameisim, the resurrection of the dead. When the resurrection occurs, the part of each person that is going to be restored to life is the most modest and humble part, and that part alone. The bliss of olam haba, the bliss of eternal life, will not be experienced by anyone except the person who has true humility and even meekness. This is the part of us that is going to live on.

Think about this amazing concept that the Rebbe teaches us. Not only is eternal life linked to humility, but also the pleasure of being close to Hashem and serving Him is linked to humility. Humility is not low self-esteem. It is not putting oneself down. Humility, the trait which Moshe Rabbeinu, Aharon HaKohen, and Pinchas-Eliyahu, had above all.

This humbleness is saying: This is the best part of me. This is the part, the humble part, that truly serves Hashem now, and is going to serve Hashem in olam haba.

May you have a day of holy self-esteem and true humility.
