Working for a Living

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov taught… |
The song of the Levites—the natural and harmonious give and take among musicians—can be compared to working for a living in good faith. Because business is also called “give and take,” and one needs to focus on its higher purpose in order to sanctify it. (Likutey Moharan I:13) |
What does this mean to me? |
We often use the term “making a living” to speak about the work that we do to earn money. But it’s always important to remember that we can’t “make a living,” we can only live. The money that we earn helps us to do it, but our lives are much bigger than the money that we earn. |
A prayer: |
Though I have no choice but to work to support myself and those who depend on me, let my job never dominate my life and psyche. Let me never be so caught up in the pursuit of my livelihood that I stoop to dishonesty in order to get ahead. Let me make no transaction without recognizing that any measure of success I might find can come only from You.
