The great Rabbi, head of the Beis Din, Rav Mordechai Halberstam of Sokolov, was so genuinely humble he would cry his heart out at Rebbe Nachman’s grave in Uman as if he were the worst sinner. What’s the secret to a joyous life? “Ah, prustak!” said the Rebbe. “Ah, simplicity!”
This seven-part class will focus on one of the most beloved of Rebbe Nachman’s 13 major stories, The Sophisticate and The Simpleton, the story of two friends. The sophisticate travels the world, acquiring tremendous amounts of philosophical and scientific knowledge. The simpleton stays home and becomes a mediocre shoemaker. In the end their paths meet and the surprising conclusion offers us insights into the meaning of success and happiness.
Series: Human Self-Creation with the Kabbalah of Rebbe Nachman
In this moving lesson (Likutey Moharan 15) Rebbe Nachman reveals the true nature and experience of Yirat Hashem, Fear of G-d, which is the essence of Divine Service. The path to this ‘ultimate goal’ requires faith and trust, prayer, hitbodedut (intense meditative prayer) study, and connecting to Hashem via the mitzvot.
Genuine Yirah (fear) is living with the consciousness that only Hashem controls and directs the events of our lives and the events of the world. This authentic Yirah liberates us from baseless fears and false worries which tend to dominate our inner being—if we let them. Accordingly, true Yirat Hashem liberates us from the bonds of the unreal and allows us to reach our true spiritual potential.
Once an arrogant, master kabbalist came to Rebbe Nachman…in this short story of a meeting between Rebbe Nachman and a learned but haughty man, Meir Elkabas explains the importance of honesty, humility, and seeking the truth.
Rebbe Nachman explains what a sense of true personal worth and true humility really are.
Relationships form the core of a woman’s life and are integral to her psycho-spiritual wellbeing, but for many of us, they are also one of the most challenging life-areas.
