Get to Know God (HaShem)- Rebbe Nachman’s Wisdom #1

Dovid HaMelech says, “For I know that God is great.” (Psalms 135:5) Why does he say, “I know”? Didn’t other people also know that God was great?

Because HaShem is so incredibly great—His ways so deep and profound, whatever I experience of Him today, cannot be shared with anyone else. There is simply no use of language that can effectively communicate my relationship and perception of the Infinite Being. If someone asks, “Explain God to me?” Only our basic definition of Him can be shared.

Furthermore, whatever knowledge of Him I grasp today, cannot be experienced again tomorrow. The insight I glean today, will never truly be fully appreciated and felt again.

Some people have an overly simplistic view of Judaism and HaShem. They are content to carry out a certain deed or ritual; or maintain a basic belief and believe that they have fulfilled their duty. This understanding is short sighted. There are endless levels of connection in the wait for us to plug into.

Be mindful and always look for HaShem. Every day is an opportunity to grasp a unique measure of HaShem’s greatness.
