This seven-part class will focus on one of the most beloved of Rebbe Nachman’s 13 major stories, The Sophisticate and The Simpleton, the story of two friends. The sophisticate travels the world, acquiring tremendous amounts of philosophical and scientific knowledge. The simpleton stays home and becomes a mediocre shoemaker. The goal of learning in the secular world is for self-gratification, status, power. The goal of learning in the world of Torah is for the sake of Hashem. It’s fueled by Emunah (Faith.) Even if there is great intellectual power in this kind of Torah learning, the motivation and “flavor” of this learning is completely different.
