There Is No Place Away From Him.

Meshivat Nefesh #51

What do we mean when we say that we feel far from God?

How can far even apply to God, who is absolutely everywhere?

One of the Names that we use for God is “HaMakom”—The Place. The sages taught, “He is the Place of the world, but the world is not His Place.” All places are rooted in Him, but He is not confined by space at all.

If I feel far, it’s because I’ve forgotten that God is The Place of the World—there is no place that is away from Him. And if that’s the case, then all I need to do to feel close again…is to remember that right here, no matter where I am or what I’m going through, I am already in the Place where He is.

Blessed Makom of all the worlds,
Please help me to remember always
that no place is away from You.
When I hold this thought in my mind
I immediately feel that I am
right here, in the light of Your Presence.
I am in the Right Place.
(Likutey Halachot, Hilchot Tzitzit 3:9)
